Kathmandu, Oct 26: Minister for Information and Communications Dr Bikram Timilsina has urged the Film Development Board to carry out concrete works for the development of the film sector by becoming a common institution of all those associated with the film industry.
Handing over appointment letter to the newly appointed Chairman of the Board, Manish Pandit, at the ministry today, Communications Minister Timilsina mentioned that filmmakers have complained that the board has not been able to be everyone's shared platform and said that filmmakers have high expectations from the current government.
"Movies are not made by the government, nor does the government play a major role in making movies. The government’s role is to provide the right environment, the right policies, and encouragement. The board should work solidly for the development of the film sector, staying in between the government and filmmakers," he said.
He emphasized moving away from the idea that the board is only for a certain class or a certain group of people and making it a body for all people associated with the film industry.
"When that sense of belonging is established, working becomes easier, and the support you receive from the film industry also increases," the Minister suggested.
Describing the film industry as a field of opportunities and challenges, he said that by staying clear of any malpractices and maintaining accountability within the institution in the first phase, efforts should be made so that the questions raised against the board until today do not arise in the future, and that discipline should be maintained.
Minister Dr Timilsina mentioned that for the development of the film industry, it is necessary to provide a budget and financial support, as well as to address the small weaknesses seen in policy reforms and implementation.
"Money isn't everything. The government needs to work on policies and the environment. The government expects the board to carry out concrete work that will contribute to the development of the film industry," he emphasized on the occasion.
Stating that the real test for the newly appointed chairman Pandit has now begun, Minister Dr Timilsina urged him to work in a way that his tenure becomes exemplary in the board's history, and also extended his best wishes.
He said that by moving forward through extensive consultations and dialogues, and charting out its path ahead, which it couldn't take in the past, the film industry could achieve effective progress.
Rabilal Sharma, the joint secretary of the ministry and a member of the board chairperson recommendation committee, briefed about the selection process.
He said that there were altogether 12 applicants for the board chairman, and from them, after various stages including presentations and interviews, the names of the top three were recommended to the ministry.
Out of those three people, the government, based on the cabinet's decision on October 16, has appointed Pandit as the board chairman, Sharma added.
