Chitwan, Oct 26: The Chitwan Rhinos cricket club, established in a region renowned for its rare one-horned rhinoceros population, is dedicating itself to rhinoceros conservation efforts.
Based in Chitwan, the club has committed to allocating five percent of revenues generated from merchandise sales, including t-shirts and related items, toward rhinoceros conservation initiatives.
Operating as a sister organization of Chitwan Medical College, Chitwan Rhinos has been promoting Chitwan and its iconic rhinoceros species globally through cricket participation, currently competing in the Nepal Premium League (NPL) for the third consecutive year.
Ayush Neupane, President of Chitwan Rhinos Sports Club, emphasized the organization's commitment, stating that given the club's nomenclature directly references the rhinoceros, contributing to its preservation represents a natural obligation.
The club actively disseminates conservation messaging by incorporating one-horned rhinoceros imagery throughout its communications. Through cricket, Chitwan Rhinos endeavors to introduce the one-horned rhinoceros population of Chitwan National Park to international audiences within the tourism sector.
The organization previously achieved fourth position in the inaugural NPL edition and seventh position in the subsequent edition. Pratap Devkota, club director, expressed aspirations for championship performance and disclosed that Chitwan Rhinos has facilitated live broadcast arrangements across multiple district locations, including Birendra Campus Chowk, Bishal Chowk, and Chitwan Spicy Herb at Dipendra Chowk.
Devkota further noted that the club prioritizes conservation initiatives, extends support to community-based cricket organizations, provided humanitarian assistance to Bhotekoshi flood victims, and serves as a sponsor for local musical events. He concluded by affirming the club's dual mission: advancing cricket while simultaneously protecting the rhinoceros species.
Narayan Prasad Adhikari, Head of the District Coordination Committee in Chitwan, expressed that Chitwan's designation as one of eight clubs nationwide represents a significant achievement. He emphasized that the sport will foster discipline and noted that such clubs will serve to enhance public interest and engagement with the game.
As preparations progress at the Chitwan Rhinos venue, enthusiasts throughout the district are celebrating in hotels, restaurants, and public gathering spaces. Banners displaying the Chitwan Rhinos emblem are prominently displayed on roadside structures, commercial establishments, and community areas.
The third season of the NPL commences today. The championship-winning team will be awarded Rs. 15 million in prize money. The runner-up team will receive Rs. 8 million, as confirmed by the Nepal Cricket Association (CAN).
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has granted international recognition to the NPL for the inaugural time.
